What is the difference between Asian Gardening and European
Gardening? KC Yee thoughts are that European
gardens are about Grandeur, and Asian gardens are miniaturized harmony.
The great landscape and fantastically big statues of the French and British royal Gardens typifies the style of European garden. Its grandeur is show openness, power and wealth.
On the other hand, when one mentions Asian garden, bonsai trees comes to mind. In fact, Asian garden is not just about miniature bonsai trees, it is also about miniature lakes, bridges and mountains. Asian garden is often enclosed inside a wall. To me, Asian garden represent harmony, our (human) oneness or harmony with nature. It is not about openness, but rather it is about oneness.
K C Yee love bonsai trees. It takes years of planning, and designing, and trimming to have a good bonsai tree. One has to start to design it from very early stage, and the design is not just the will of the designer, the designer has to respect the Bonsai tree, respect its natural tendencies, and then trim and slightly bend the tree into an unique design.
K C Yee get up every morning, rain or shine, check on my bonsai trees, and think about what they could be. Then get my trimmers out…slowly trimming away at them for hours. Bonsai tree, by its nature, likes to spread sideways, when K C Yee is trimming at them, always have a picture of what they will be. To push tree to tend towards one direction, K C Yee have to put this side of the tree towards the sun, and the bonsai tree would grow towards the sun shine, and achieve my design.
Bonsai trees are a perfect example of man and nature working together. Bonsai tree under man’s care lives :”forever”, whereas in nature, like most other trees, Bonsai has a life time of about 300 years. Most trees die because the active branches/leafs grows too far away from the active roots system. The leafs can’t effectively send energy source (sugar) to the roots, and roots can’t effectively send water and other nutrients to the leafs.
When Bonsai tree is under human care, we trim and bend, and mostly miniaturize the tree, and the active branches/leafs could never grow too far away from the roots, and both stay healthy.
